It’s been 12 years since a Houston team has brought home the state volleyball title, but all eyes are on The Woodlands Highlanders as they could be the ones to represent Spike City. The Woodlands, led by coach Leslie Madison, appeared in the state finals in 2010, but haven’t been able to return to San Marcos, the site of the state tourney.
“In 2012, we started off slow but we had good chemistry and ended up being really good in the end,” Madison said. “I think just being The Woodlands means everyone wants to beat us for who we are. Then as a ranked team, everyone wants to be the one to beat you and knock you down.”
The Lady Highlanders are used to having a target on their back though. Madison is bringing back several key players who have started for the Lady Highlanders three and four years running. Sisters Kelly Quinn (Libero) and Courtney Quinn (outside-hitter) seem to take a leadership role for Madison, purely because of their time on the varsity level.
