For the year-round high school baseball player, the fall is filled with lonely days in hot batting cages and weight rooms. As football players play under the Friday night lights to the cheers of thousands and walk thru the school halls as celebrities, baseball players can only count the months until they move into the spotlight. However for a few days in September that all changes when the annual TASO baseball tournament is held. The Texas Association of Sports Officials provide officials to all UIL contest.
The tournament provide scholarships to high school baseball players. Local recipients in 2012 were Kolbi Brown of The Woodlands high school and Jeff Sitarski of College Park High school. Players are made up of committed Division 1 student athletes and players trying to prove they belong at the varsity level when the season begins in 2014. With both the 5A (Woodlands HS) and 4A (Tomball HS) state champions coming from the north Houston area, the tournament will showcase some of the best high school talent in the country.
The 2013 tournament will begin Thursday Sept. 5 at both College Park High School and McCullough Jr. High School.
