Girls Basketball: Mack, Lufkin roll by Conroe

Lufkin’s Natasha Mack scored 24 points and Conroe shot 14 percent from the field as the Lady Panthers picked up a 51-28 victory at the Marsha Porter Gymnasium on Friday night.

Mack, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, dominated the game on both ends of the floor, blocking a handful of shots on defense and altering countless others.

“The offense that we run and our defensive sets allow us to put her in the middle and just sit back and play more of a matchup-type thing outside on the guards because we know we’ll be protected inside,” Lufkin coach Winfred Simmons said.

Behind 14 points from Mack, and despite 11 turnovers, the Lady Panthers led 19-7 at halftime. The Tigerettes didn’t make a field goal until Erica Powell’s layup with 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Powell hit a deep 3-pointer to cut Conroe’s deficit to 9-6 at the start of the second, but the Tigerettes didn’t make another shot until the third quarter — missing their final 16 of the second and first two of the third. click here for complete story
