A&M Consolidated’s boys basketball team got after The Woodlands on Friday night, but the Tigers couldn’t get over, around or in front of the taller Highlanders when it mattered most.
The Highlanders used their length on defense to give Consol fits and came up with a couple of huge offensive rebounds in the closing minutes, holding on for a 42-36 victory at Tiger Gym. Consol trailed for most of the last three quarters, but the Tigers made a couple of runs to put themselves in position to knock off the defending District 14-5A champions. Consol pulled within 33-31 when freshman guard Tre Flowers made a 3-pointer with 4 minutes, 1 second left.
After that, the visitors scored second-chance baskets on their next two possessions, while Consol missed on a hurried 3-point attempt and a drive into the heart of the Highlanders’ defensive forest.
“I told my kids that when you do things that hurt yourself, make a turnover or miss an assignment, it’s hard to win ballgames.” Consol coach Rick German said. “Our kids played hard. We’ve got to mature in our game and get to where we’re not making unforced errors.”
The Woodlands (12-5, 2-0) held on to first place in the district despite not shooting well or taking good care of the basketball. The Highlanders made 15 of 35 shots and committed 18 turnovers. click here for complete story
