Conroe was without its two leading rebounders for Friday night’s District 14-5A game with Bryan, losing 6-foot-7 junior Myron Wright to a hand injury in pre-game warmups. But in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, the Tigers had a chance. They trailed Bryan by five points and had the basketball.
Unfortunately for Conroe, though, the Tigers launched a quick 3-point shot. And the Vikings got the ball downcourt and went to Quaylon Newton, who had no equal in this game. Newton scored 28 points to lead the Vikings to a 66-46 victory, a game that had first-year Conroe coach John Oliverio in the locker room with his team several minutes after it was over.
“We ran some good offense in the third quarter,” Oliverio said. “Less ‘open gym,’ less their kind of game. They’re legit. They’re hard to guard.
“We just ran out of gas.”
Bryan improved to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in 14-5A play while the Tigers fell to 7-10 and 0-2 respectively. click here for complete story and additional photos
