Football: Players make verbal commitments as National Signing Day closes in

National Signing Day is getting closer and closer with each passing week and it seems quite a few Examiner coverage area football players have made a verbal decision as to where they want to go where they want to go when it comes time to put their names on the letters-of-intent.
Once again, Lamar, which is graduating a group of seniors that won 39 games since they were sophomores, continues to be a pipeline to SMU with three Redskins currently committed to play for the Mustangs in the new American Athletic Conference (AAC). That trio heading to Dallas makes it five in the last two years who could be wearing the Red, White, and Blue in their college days.

Currently, Lamar has quarterback Darrell Colbert Jr., offensive lineman Braylon Hyder, and outside linebacker Kiran Mitchell as the three players who have committed to join Lancaster and Minor at SMU. And like Minor was the 20-5A MVP in 2012, if the commits hold, SMU will be getting the district MVP for the second consecutive year in Colbert, who won it in 2013 when the all-district selections were named.

The Redskins also appear set to have other big signings coming the first Wednesday in February because three-year starting cornerback John Bonney is headed to the University of Texas and 6-foot-3, 270-pound tackle Ira Lewis has announced he will be attending Baylor to play for the Bears. If those guys keep those current deals, then they will go from teammates to guys who will be playing each other frequently.
And wide receiver Shelby Walker is another player who has made his verbal commitment. Walker is a small, speedy elusive wideout who has been a part of the Redskins’ starting lineup for the past three years.
Kinkaid will also be sending at least a trio of players to the collegiate ranks after winning the SPC championship with a perfect 11-0 record last year.
Wide receiver Mavin Saunders, who played just two years for the Falcons, along with linebacker William Clement, and safety Thomas Dillon, are all signing as soon as they can and Saunders has committed to play for defending national champion Florida State. Saunders is a 6-foot-6, 220-pound wide receiver who began his high school career playing basketball at St. Thomas, but two years ago he made the decision to play football and was immediately gathering attention because of his size, speed, and sure hands.
Dillon, like Saunders, is also headed to the Atlantic Coast Conference but the 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior has committed to play at Wake Forest.
Clement is staying in the Southwest part of the country — he will be going to Las Cruses, N.M., to play for New Mexico State as he has committed to be an Aggie.
Bellaire will have quite a few players sign with someone, but the Cardinals’ biggest name and one of their larger players is standout offensive lineman Devante Jones. The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder has indicated his preference right now is with Baylor.
St.Thomas senior Chris Zook, a three-year starter for the Eagles, will be joining the military and has committed to play for the Army.
