Conroe’s Winton, Newton, Oak Ridge’s Bates, The Woodlands’ Weingrad win state wrestling titles

Conroe wrestler Nicola Newton raised her hands above her head. She had done it. 53003dead1145.preview-300After four years of hard work and dedication, she could finally call herself a state champion. Newton, teammate Rebecka Winton, Oak Ridge’s Rachel Bates and The Woodlands’ Jacob Weingrad completed quite the haul for local athletes on Saturday at the UIL Wrestling State Championships at the Curtis Culwell Center. All four left the arena with first-place medals dangling from their necks.

Newton won the state championship in the 185-pound division with a pin of Cypress Ridge’s Mashyrah Rayson in 3 minutes, 15 seconds. Making her title even more impressive was the fact that she ended her senior season with a perfect 40-0 record. Click here for complete story and photo gallery
