College Park senior Tristen Newman easily dismissed all challengers in the shot put after finishing second in the discus.
Newman, a Standford signee, finished second in the shot at the state meet last year, only 7½ inches behind La Joya Palmview’s Felipe Valencia. His first five attempts Saturday cleared 60 feet, including his best of 62-3. No other competitor came within 14 feet. “It’s nice, but I really want the competition pushing me to be better,” Newman said. Newman hit 137-5 in the discus. Brenham’s Austin Schlottmann won with a toss of 138-11. Newman was backed by the support of his family and Jayden Holden, his teammate on the Cavaliers’ basketball and football squads. click here for complete story and photo gallery
