Track & Field: The Woodlands girls claim Region 2-5A track title

The Woodlands girls captured the Region II-5A track and field championship on Saturday, and the Lady Highlanders did it in style.

The Woodlands won the final event of the evening, the 1,600-meter relay, to finish with 88 team points. Allen was second with 70 points and Richardson was third with 40 points.

The Woodlands boys finished third in the team standings with 45 points. Kingwood was first with 54 points, followed by Klein Oak (52), The Woodlands, Oak Ridge (38) and College Park (35).

McLellan, who won the 3,200-meter run on Friday, added the victory in the 1,600 with a time of 4:56.71. McKinney Boyd’s Aaliyah Miller was second (5:01.24) and the Lady Highlanders’ Kara Zuspan (5:03.41) was third. The Woodlands’ Logan Emery turned in a time of 4:21.36 to win the boys 1,600, followed by College Park’s Christopher Williams (4:21.99). College Park’s Connor Meaux was fifth. Meaux was the winner in the 3,200 on Friday.

Oak Ridge’s Trumaine Jefferson needed just one attempt to win the long jump, getting off a mark of 24 feet, 10 inches before resting for the 1,600 relay. The Woodlands’ Patrick Carr finished a strong second, however, getting off a jump of 23-11½ to advance to the state meet.
