7-on-7 Football: The Woodlands punches ticket to state tourney

The Woodlands makes summer travel plans to College Station in July

The Woodlands punched its ticket to the 7-on-7 state tournament at its own state qualifier for the third straight year last week. It beat Cypress Creek by three touchdowns in the semifinals to secure its spot.

“There are a lot of things that happen in the summer for kids,” coach Mark Schmid said. “We’ve got kids going to different football camps and SAT tests, and things like that, but our tournament is one of those where our kids make a big effort for all of us to be here to represent at our home field and make a big push to qualify. It’s pretty neat to see that we’ve been able to do that the last three years.”

The Highlanders won their SQT last year, beating Westfield 28-20 in the final after topping Montgomery in the semis. Two years ago, they beat Klein in the semis and fell to Klein Collins in the final. Read more…
