Baseball: 2014 All Montgomery County Team

The Woodlands’ Andritsos headlines all-county team

The Woodlands had a formidable challenge on its hands after winning the UIL state baseball championship in 2013. Everyone would be gunning for the Highlanders a few months later, and The Woodlands lost several key players from that 38-4 squad.

The young gun, however, was back. And Chris Andritsos made sure the Highlanders were ready to stay in contention for postseason glory. Andritsos isThe Courier’s choice for Montgomery County Player of the Year.

“Chris was a special player for us this year,” The Woodlands coach Ron Eastman said. “On the mound. At the plate. As a leader.”

Andritsos, the Highlanders’ junior pitcher-first baseman, was a steadying influence for the District 14-5A champion Highlanders. The Woodlands reached the area round of the Class 5A playoffs and finished the season 27-7, including a 10-2 mark in league play.

Pitcher of the Year: Beau Ridgeway, College Park: College Park got into the Class 5A playoffs and turned to junior right-hander Beau Ridgeway in its first postseason game against Atascocita. The Cavaliers’ 3-1 loss to the Eagles, who went on to reach the state tournament, was a microcosm of Ridgeway’s season. Ridgeway allowed just three hits, compared to 10 for the Cavs, but Atascocita found a way to win. College Park left the bases loaded in the fifth and seventh innings.

Newcomer of the Year: Austin Stokes, College Park: Washburn believes Stokes’ role with the Cavaliers was simple. “He’s a catalyst,” Washburn said.

The 5-foot-7, 150-pound junior outfielder played junior varsity ball in 2013, but making the adjustment to District 14-5A pitching wasn’t too daunting a task for Stokes. He hit .297 with a .416 on-base percentage and had five doubles and 10 RBIs. Most of the time, he hit in the middle of the College Park lineup. click here for complete story and additional photos
