College Park’s Chris Barnes is Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine’s preseason pick for the Class 6A all-state punter, but coach Carson says he could shine at several positions this season.
“He’s a guy who does a little bit of everything for us,” Carson said. “There are times when he’ll score the touchdown, kick the extra point, kick off and make the tackle. And he punted for us also, and we do some directional punting, and sometimes some rugby punting, and he does a good job with it.”
In addition to handling the kicking and punting duties, Barnes, who checks in at 6-1, 215 pounds, is the team’s starting tight end. Carson said he’ll probably see time at linebacker this year as well.
Barnes’ brothers did a lot for College Park before they graduated, too.
But Dave Campbell’s, widely regarded as the bible of Texas football, doesn’t see Barnes helping College Park return to the playoffs. The Cavaliers are picked sixth, behind The Woodlands, Atascocita, Kingwood, Oak Ridge and Summer Creek, which is making the leap up to 6A.
The Woodlands running back Patrick Carr is the magazine’s pick for 16-6A Offensive MVP. Kingwood’s DeWitt Thomas is their preseason Defensive MVP. click HERE for compete story
