Soccer: San Antonio might host state soccer tournament

A week after landing the UIL boys and girls state basketball tournaments, San Antonio could be in line to host another championship event.

Peter Contreras, an assistant athletic director at the University Interscholastic League, said Monday that San Antonio and Georgetown are being considered as the location for the state soccer tournament. Contreras, who oversees soccer, said during a lecture at the Texas High School Coaches Association Convention that the UIL hopes to make a decision within three weeks. The tournament is in April.

“We’ll ultimately make the decision that’s best for the soccer tournament,” he said.

Georgetown has hosted the state tournament for 13 seasons (1998-2004, 2009-present), but with the UIL adding a third classification for next year, two venues in close proximity would likely be required.
