Volleyball: Local high school teams start season with a bang

Local high school volleyball teams kicked off the 2014 season last week with non-district tournament games. The Woodlands, College Park, Oak Ridge, Cooper and The Woodlands Christian all hit the courts in search a strong start. Here is a recap of all the action: click here for complete story

The Woodlands

The defending state champions picked up where they left off in their season opener against College Station on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at The Woodlands High School. The Lady Highlanders completed a quick 3-0 sweep of the Cougars, taking a 25-14, 25-15, 25-10 victory.

College Park

College Park also opened the season with a victory on Tuesday, Aug. 12, successfully defending its home court against Klein Collins with a 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 25-13 victory.

Kennedi Smith recorded 16 kills and five aces for the Lady Cavaliers, while Emily Thorson added 16 kills and 13 digs. Hannah Erwin paced the offense with 36 assists and led College Park with 14 digs.

Oak Ridge

The Lady War Eagles kicked off the season with a sweep of The John Cooper School on Tuesday, Aug. 12, defeating the Dragons 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.

Victoria Harris led Oak Ridge with 14 kills while also recording 14 digs. Jackie Ward paced the offense with 25 assists to go along with 16 digs. Carly Graham tallied 20 assists and 11 digs, and Brooke Clarke added 11 kills. Reagan Ciancuilli recorded a team-high 23 digs.

The John Cooper School

The John Cooper School opened its season with a victory over Conroe (20-25, 25-9, 25-14, 25-18) on Monday, Aug. 11.

The Woodlands Christian

The Woodlands Christian Academy got its season started over the weekend at the Baytown Christian Tournament.
