Football: College Park set for big district game against Kingwood

College Park and Kingwood are both fighting for their playoff lives, so Saturday’s matchup between the two teams obviously holds a ton a weight. Two playoff spots remain in District 16-6A, and three teams are still in the mix.

The Cavaliers (2-6, 1-3) will tangle with the Mustangs (2-6, 1-3) at 1 p.m. at Turner Stadium. College Park won the last matchup between the two programs with a 31-24 victory back on Sept. 30, 2011. Kingwood, College Park and Summer Creek are the trio of teams battling to make the postseason.

The Cavs are coming off their first league win of the season after beating Summer Creek 42-28 at Woodforest Bank Stadium last Saturday. The Mustangs, meanwhile, are coming off a 28-21 loss to Atascocita.

“It’s going to be an intense ballgame,” College Park coach Richard Carson said. “What’s going to be different is — and they even did it last week against Atascocita — they went for it on fourth down a few times just like Summer Creek did.

“You’ve got to pick your spots, when you’re going to do that, but it’s going to be a little different. It’s going to make it even more intense because everywhere on the field is four-down territory.”

The Mustangs have gained 68 percent of their yardage on the ground this season and have two of the top nine rushers in the district with Griffin Lay (561 yards) and Damon Young (474). Quarterback Randall Graves runs the show and is a threat to make timely plays in Kingwood’s conservative passing game. click here for complete story
