State cross country: The Woodlands boys second; Meaux, Cavs third

The Woodlands and College Park boys dominated much of the competition at the UIL State Cross Country Championships at Old Settlers Park on Saturday afternoon, finishing second and third, respectively, in Class 6A.

The Highlanders clinched silver with a score of 105, beating out the Cavaliers by 12 points. Southlake Carroll won its fourth straight state title with a total of 94. David Strome of Colleyville Heritage took the individual title with a time of 15 minutes, 23.81 seconds.

The Woodlands was led by Eric Kroon, who finished 26th overall with time of 16 minutes, 11.80 seconds. Matthew McClellan (29th, 16:14.01), Javier Erana (33rd, 16:16.91), William Hunsdale (35th, 16:18.66) and Noah Wells (38th, 16:23.13) rounded out the Highlanders’ contributors.

“It never gets old,” The Woodlands coach Juris Green said. “Given what we’ve been through — we didn’t have our No. 1 guy (Michael Butero), and we haven’t had him all season — it really clarified what we had to do as a team, which was be very, very tight together. We were 11 seconds between our one and five (runners) today. We were the only team in the top five that didn’t have a guy in the top 10. that just shows what a team can do here.”

College Park, meanwhile, was led by two-time regional champion Connor Meaux, who finished in third place with a time of 15 minutes, 36.57 seconds. Walter Sagehorn (19th, 16:04.05), Adam Breaux (41st, 16.25.48), Colton Nettleton (54th, 16:35.29) and Cooper Burner (64th, 16:47.17) rounded out the Cavs’ contributors. click here for complete story
