For the first time this March, the cadets enrolled in the fire science technology program at Lone Star College-Montgomery won’t have to pack up all their gear and drive to Houston for an important part of their training.
In previous years The Woodlands Emergency Training Center, where the cadets train, was not equipped with a flashover chamber, which is a small room made of modified shipping containers where cadets can safely observe a fire.
This past fall, LSC-M acquired the $45,000 flashover chamber to add to the training facility in The Woodlands.
“It puts it in our own backyard,” said David Griffin, director of the program. “We have a good training facility and this was missing.”
The flashover chamber is essential to the cadets’ training because it teaches them about the different stages of a fire and how to control it, as well as gives them an opportunity to get familiar with their gear and learn firsthand the importance of regulated breathing and staying low, Griffin explained. click here for complete story
