An ace performance by Chris Andritsos led The Woodlands Highlanders to a 4-3 win in 10 innings over the Atascocita Eagles on Wednesday at Scotland Yard.
Due to rain last Friday, this rescheduled matchup forced both teams to rebound from tough District 16-6A losses the night before.
With MLB scouts in the stands, The Oklahoma Commit Andritsos handled Atascocita’s lineup, racking up 15 strikeouts. Andritsos allowed 2 earned runs on 7 hits and no walks over 9 innings.
Offensively, Andritsos blasted 2 home runs for The Highlanders. Andritsos went 2-4 in the game with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Andritsos homered in the 4th and 10th innings. A walk-off solo home run by Andritsos gave The Highlanders their only lead in the game and a dramatic walk-off win.
Freshman Steven Beard picked up his first high school win in relief for The Woodlands. The lefty Beard pitched 1 inning, struck out 2 and allowed no runs.
Mitchell Johnson was the game’s losing pitcher. He lasted 6 1/3 innings, walked 2, struck out 5, and allowed 2 runs.
Atascocita jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. After Noah Payne singled, Atascocita kept the pressure on The Woodlands pitching, as Nico Garza doubled, bringing home Payne. Atascocita scored 1 run in the 6th inning, and then followed it up with 1 more in the 8th. In the 6th, Atascocita scored on an RBI single by Alerick Soularie, scoring Texas State signee Anthony Pagano.
With their backs against the wall, The
Woodlands tied the game in the 7th on an RBI single by Zach Gartner that scored Tommy Simutis. After a quick strike from Atascocita, The Woodlands responded once again with 1 run in the 8th. The Woodlands scored on an RBI double by Nick White.
There is no relief in site as both teams continue to navigate through one of the most competitive 6A Districts in the State. Atascocita’s 0-3 District start and The Woodlands 2-1 record, does not indicate just how well both teams have played. But one thing is certain – cherish every run.
