He pulls out an old gray chair and purposefully positions it in the press box. He sits down, raises his legs and braces his white Nikes against the counter, gently pushing away. He folds his arms across his green Highlander softball T-shirt as he balances the chair on its back legs. His green ball cap with the red bill, and the red ‘W,’ sits perfectly crooked on his head. It shades his green eyes from the tiny streaks of light that creep through the windows as he looks out at the softball field.

The Woodlands softball coach Richard Jorgensen is a creature of habit.

“My dad taught me what it really means to work your butt off,” Richard Jorgensen said. “It’s just like this field. I do everything—I cut the grass, fertilize it, seed it, I do all the dirt and infield work. We do everything ourselves.”

In baseball and softball, it isn’t that strange for coaches to maintain their own fields. However, it isn’t just a “baseball thing” to Jorgensen. It’s about putting in enough work to be proud of the end product. click here for complete story
