Basketball Girls: Oak Ridge aims to build on last year’s playoff appearance

Oak Ridge qualified for the playoffs last season after clinching the fourth and final spot in District 14-5A. This year, the Lady War Eagles are confident they can not only make it to the postseason but advance past the first round.

Coach Molly Gibson and her returning players have a sour taste in their mouths from the way last season ended — with an 83-28 loss to regional finalist Dekaney — and are ready for redemption.

“We have higher expectations this year,” Gibson said. “We feel like we made it so far, and this year we want to go further. We lost some key players, but we also kept some pretty key players, and then the girls we brought up from JV are strong players. I definitely think we have the squad to do it, to make it further than we did last year.”

With the loss of first-team all-county forward J’Taisha Bryant and talented guard Jacquira Manning, Gibson said she will lean on Raquel Kellow, Kelsey Scibek, Macie Chapa, Emily Hill and Courtney Cassidy to carry the load. click here for full story
