In the first 33 Class 5A baseball state tournaments, a team from the area played in the championship game 19 times. The area has six titles since 2004 and 13 since 1994.
Atascocita was the last team standing this season, but San Antonio Reagan wanted to make its own history Friday.
“If we’re going to get there and win it, we were going to have to go through a Houston team,” said San Antonio Reagan head coach Chans Chapman after his Rattlers scored in the bottom of the seventh to beat Atascocita 5-4 at Dell Diamond. “We were fortunate enough today that we did. And tomorrow, we get to play a Dallas team.”
Reagan (34-6) will play Flower Mound in the 5A finals, with the two meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Jaguars beat Pearland in the other semifinal and will play in their first championship since 2004.
It snaps a three-year streak of Houston 5A titles (Brazoswood, Cypress Ranch and The Woodlands) and marks the first time since 2009 that an area team isn’t in the title game. Read more…
