A football district title in Class 6A could come with a significant bonus for the 2015 season.
The UIL Standing Committee on Athletics approved a one-year pilot program Tuesday that would award home field to the district champion of each division in the first round of the playoffs. Under the previous system schools would negotiate to play at a neutral site or flip a coin to determine which school selected the neutral site location.
“I think it’s a positive step,” said Midland ISD Executive Director of Athletics Todd Howey. “If you’re the district champion you should get to host someone in your home stadium. It would be fun, unique and exciting. It’s worth a shot to see how it folds out.”
The pilot program still requires the approval of the UIL’s Legislative Council in October to go into effect. The decision to limit the pilot program to Class 6A schools stems from a 2013 superintendents’ survey conducted by the UIL. click here for complete story
