Baseball: College Park alum Toups eyeing Royal task

College Park alumnus pursuing professional dream in Kansas City organization

College Park baseball produced its fourth draft pick earlier this month.

Infielder Corey Toups, a 2011 graduate who was playing at Sam Houston State, was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 15th round, No. 453 overall, of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He signed with the Royals shortly afterward, then reported to Idaho Falls, Idaho, for short-season rookie ball.

“I expected it, just because I stay in contact with a lot scouts, and they often will ask me – even though the kids are in college – about our guys who have gone on to play in college and are draftable,” College Park coach Jason Washburn said.

“So I had received some calls on Corey, people just checking on him, and so obviously, with those calls, I knew there was interest, and probably 15th round’s a good spot for him.”

The Royals weren’t one of the teams that called Washburn about Toups, but apparently they knew enough. click HERE for complete story
