Football: Varsity minutes-shy Mavs receive good test from College Park Cavaliers

Memorial’s scrimmage with College Park Friday night revealed that the Mavs still have work to do if they want to average more than two touchdowns a game this fall like they did last season.

The Mavs’ bid to create sustained drives and stockpiling first downs on Auxiliary Stadium’s turf was inconsistent. Many times it was due to College Park’s defense, while other moments it was due to Memorial’s own mistakes, whether it was dropped passes, penalties or lack of execution.

Defensively, Memorial’s first and second units probably graded out better even though it surrendered moments like the 65-yard touchdown run by a Cavalier ballcarrier, who burst up the middle between the tackles and then found daylight for the night’s longest TD score.

College Park’s running attack was its best weapon because when the handful of times the visitors tried to pass, the ball was usually overthrown. That was just the opposite of Memorial’s struggles in the passing game because its passes were being underthrown. click here for complete story
