Piperi, 16, was the winner in the boys 16-and-under IAAF World Youth Championships on Wednesday night, in Coli, Columbia, getting off a throw of 22 meters (72 feet, 2 1/4 inches) on his second attempt of the finals.

The impressive throw with a slightly smaller ball — male high school athletes in Texas and across the United States use a 12-pound shot — sent Piperi from third place to first before the large crowd at Cali’s Pascual Guerrero Stadium.
