The Woodlands cross country kicks off the season by hosting its annual Friday Night Lights meet Friday at the Bear Branch Soccer Complex. The Highlanders boys were fifth last year and the girls won the meet.

“It’s fun,” coach Juris Green said. “Our girls program hosts it. Noel Hansenheads it up, and it’s fun just because it’s different. It’s at night (and) it’s odd distances. At the beginning of the season you can find cross country relays or just straight races that are not the proper UIL distance.

“So it’s good for the kids just to get their feet wet.”

Green said his runners get excited about Friday Night Lights. It’s a big meet with a lot of strong schools, and the Highlanders have the luxury of competing in their first meet of the season at home. click here for complete story
