Fall tennis is more of a team sport – schools win or lose on team scores – and as a team, The Woodlands punched its ticket to the Class 6A Region II Championships Friday after defeating Rockwall Heath 19-0 in the UIL Class 6A area round, followed by a 12-4 win over Longview in the semifinals.
The Woodlands is headed to the regional tournament for the 11th straight year and College Park will be the other representative out of the area tournament. The Highlanders will be the top seed after they defeated the Cavaliers back in September during district play.
The Highlanders won two girls doubles matches with Longview. Michaela Csikos and Avery Hilbig won in the No. 2 match while Lauren Cole and Natalia Castellanos won the No. 3 flight.
The Woodlands also grabbed a point in the mixed doubles match as Adrian Aliaga and Morena Andres won in straight sets.
The boys fared well in singles play as No. 1 Ben Friedman, No. 2 Brian Kugler, No. 3 Esteban and No. 4 Garrett Skelly took straight set wins. No. 5 Aliaga and No. 6 Laner didn’t finish their matches.
College Park defeated Tyler Lee HS to finished second to The Woodlands in the area tournament. College Park’s girls doubles Avery Colburn and Dani Pishulla won, 6-1, 6-3; Bella Crawford and Keely Chacon won, 6-2, 6-1; and Kristen Bohnet and Behne won, 6-1, 6-2. In girls singles Dania Pischulla routed her opponent 6-1, 6-2.
In boys singles, Gavon Salton won his match, 6-2, 6-7. Boys doubles went three of three to College Park, with Gavin Salton and Fish Bhatnagar won No. 1 match, Max Martakov and Kelvin Yu teaming for a win in the No. 2 match, and Chris Douglas and Daniel Zou getting a win in the No. 3 match.
