There are exciting educational opportunities available to high achieving local high school graduates through the Honors College at Lone Star College-Montgomery. This fall, incoming freshman honors students will began coursework as Chancellor’s Fellows–a unique scholarship program within the Honors College at LSC-Montgomery that provides funding and advanced educational opportunities for a select number of students pursuing an honors associate degree.
The Chancellor’s Fellows scholarship allows 17-20 freshman students who are selected through a competitive application to pursue a unique Honors associate degree program. They receive an award package covering:
- All tuition and fees (up to 15 credit hours per semester)
- A book allowance of up to $600 per semester
- A fourth semester international capstone.
In addition to pursuing an individualized honors curriculum, Fellows scholarship recipients benefit from extensive co-curricular activities, specialized advising, leadership development, civic engagement opportunities, cultural events and a participation in a close-knit learning cohort.
“Our Fellows commit to a rigorous two-year, sixty credit hour, college curriculum that includes a minimum of 27 honors credits, and results in students earning an honors associates degree,” said David Kennedy, political science professor and director of the Honors College at LSC-Montgomery. “Lone Star College is one of the few community colleges in the country currently offering this specialized honors associates degree program. The honors degree plan incorporates a progression model, developing students’ analytical, research and presentation skills, providing engaging lecture series, and cultural activities outside of the classroom.”
In addition to the Chancellor’s Fellows scholarship program, the Honors College offers all students with a minimum 3.25 academic GPA the ability to earn honors course credit at LSC-Montgomery and build essential critical thinking skills, all within a smaller, college within a college environment.
Students participating in The Honors College benefit from scholarship and internship opportunities, specialized honors and transfer academic advising, early registration, smaller class sizes, honors designation on transcripts, and much more.
Incoming LSC-Montgomery freshman Tania Bahena couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity presented to her.
“This is an open door to becoming successful in my life,” Bahena said. “This isn’t just about getting a scholarship, this is a way of investing.”
As a member of the Fellows cohort who will graduate from LSC-Montgomery in 2017, Bahena knows this opportunity will have a big impact on her future as she prepares to transfer to the University of Texas at Austin.
“Aside from this scholarship allowing me to save money for after I transfer, the atmosphere of the campus itself, along with the benefits of small class sizes, will help me immensely in developing myself as a person,” Bahena said.
