Students spend hours cramming for the SAT and ACT each year in the hopes of earning an acceptance letter to a competitive college. But is the tide turning away from standardized exams?

Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., in June became the only institution of higher education in the USA to enforce a “test blind” policy, which means it will reject any test scores itreceives. Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., also recently added its name to the list of more than 800 “test optional” schools across the country.
